Following are R & D activities of the centre:
- Handing preservation, packing and storage of
fruits of the region.
- Prevention / reduction of post harvest losses
which are estimated at about 70% of the total crops for some
major fruits.
- Bulk processing of fruits for income
generation.
- Develop new value added products from fruits
and vegetables and enable farmer to obtain income from marketing
of these products.
- R & D work on minerals and medicinal plants
of the region.
Achievements:
During the last few years, the centre with
the help of PCSIR Laboratories Peshawar has done tremendous job in
training local people in preserving and processing of fruits and
vegetables. AKRSP has also cooperated is arranging the trainings.
The credit of dried fruits in packets, especially apricots &
mulberry fruits, being sold in the markets, goes to PCSIR & AKSP.
In addition to training, value-added products of available fruits
& vegetable were also developed that includes jam, jellies,
Candies, leather and dried products of apricot, apple & plum
fruits. Tomato Ketchup, paste and drying of the local vegetable wren
also undertaken.
PCSIR Skardu with the help of PCSIR Peshawar has also worked on the
medicinal plant " Seabuckthorn" and has developed a number
of its product such as, seabuckthorn drinks, juices, juice powder,
cream, shampoo and seed oil etc.
