About 90% of the population of northern areas of fruits &
vegetables as their major source of earning. Their methods
and techniques both in horticulture and agriculture are mostly
outdated, roads and other logistics infrastructure are primitive
and undevelop.Sizeable quantity of fruits, vegetables and other
agricultures, produce get spoiled on their way to market.
Fruits production can give better return to the growers of the
region if the produce is properly handled and marked. A good
amount of foreign exchange can also be earned by exporting
properly processed fruits and their value added products.
It is therefore, necessary that technical assistance in the form
of simple appropriate technology, which can easily by assimilated
by local farmers is made available, so that they can save their
valuable crops from spoilage and gain gull benefit by preserving
and storing the produce properly. Keeping in view these facts the
establishment of demonstration cum training centre for rural
technologies at Skardu, northern areas was approved by DDWP in
1988 at a cost of Rs. 9.4 million.
