Brief
Description
|
| The merger of separate Division of the laboratories of PCSIR namely, Biological Evaluation & fermentation and Food Technology & Nutrition in 1977 has a evolved into the present set-up this Centre. Though wide and varied in the scope of R&D areas being pursed by the professionals of the Division the strengths in microbiology and analytical facilities have been instrumental in keeping these activities, interlined. The major objectives are the assistance in the establishment/development of food and biotechnology industry in the country through value-added output from low-prices raw materials, bio-resource development and utilization, quality assurance of finished products, industrial trouble-shooting, and attracting small and entrepreneurs to the establishment of industry. |

Accomplishments

22 ADP/Sponsored projects, funded by the national and internal agencies such as Government of Pakistan, Pakistan Science Foundation, FAO, US-NSF, pL-480,
IDRC, etc, have been completed (approx, value: Rs. 13.7 million). The processes that are commercially in production include: Dehydration of fruits and vegetables (6 commercial production units); Yogurt (Prime dairies); Beverage concentrates (Khyber Beverages); Juice-based drinks (Florida Food and Fruit Industries); Bating agent for leather industries (pancrozyme), Cattle and poultry feeds, Desizing enzyme (Punjab Chemicals), Specialized diets; Wax emulsions for fruit storage; Fruit vinegar (Sara industries) and miscellaneous food products (National Foods; International; multi Foods; Choice Industries.

As many as 28 processes have been successfully transferred to various industries a large number of developed technologies awaiting exploitation. Over 20 industries have received/are receiving advisory services (Tetrapak, Milkpak, Packages, broast, Pakistan Army, Tops fruit juices, etc.) The analysis of over 200 samples is carried out yearly for quality assurance (approx. receipt Rs. 0.2 million) Microbiological
evaluation of drinking water, milk and other food products is also a regular feature of the Centre.
