Precision System Training Centre, Quetta

BRIEF DESCRIPTION:

Recognizing the performance of PTC, Karachi and its students role in development of Engineering industries, it was decided in the meeting of ECNEC in 1984 that institutes similar to PSTC, Karachi be established in cities as Quetta, Lahore and Peshawar. Thus PCSIR established this institute at Quetta with a total cost of Rs. 63.65 million having F.E.C. of Rs. 18.86 million.

OBJECTIVES

  1. To organize and conduct three years D.A.E. courses in Precision Mechanical & Instrument Technology for 30 students.
  2. to organize short term courses of 3 to 6 months duration for engineers and technicians employed in industry and local technical institutes.
  3. development of manufacturing facilities for precision type of machine components, gauges, tools, jigs and fixtures.

PRESENT ACTIVITIES

  1. The center, affiliated with Balochistan Board of Intermediate and secondary education, Quetta is producing specialized manpower in the field of precision mechanical and instrument technology. Courses conducted are of D.A.E. level of 03 years duration.
  2. staff referred by the local technical institutes is provided training in the fields of:
    1. machining and fabrication techniques
    2. maintenance of machine tools
    3. mechanical design and drawing
    4. training procedures

ADMISSION ELIGIBILITY AND PROCEDURE

  1. Matric “B” Grade in science or industrial art or technical group.
  2. age limit: between 15 and 19 years on 1st October
  3. selection: The application for admission in D.A.E.  courses is scrutinized by a committee and selected candidates are called for competitive entrance test and interview which is held at Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar and Quetta in the month of November / December. The exact date of interview and test is communicated to the candidates well in time.
  4. the written entrance test is taken in the subjects of English, Mathis and General Science. A guide book is provided against payment if required. In interview aptitude and I.Q. is judged.

PROCEDURE OF TRAINING, EXAMINATION & TEST

The trainees of the D.A.E. courses are adequately trained, theoretically as well as practically, by undergoing the three years training covering 1800 hours in theory and 3600 hours in theory and 3600 hours in workshop making a total of 5400 hours.

Trainees are given home assignments every week and periodical tests are held to assess the progress of the trainees. These test and assignments are accounted as 35 of the total marks allotted to a semester examination.

The trainees are required to go through the whole course set for a semester and appear in the examination conducted by the centre either for testing the progress or promotion to the next semester / class.

Minimum required marks for promotion in semester and final examinations are 50 for practical and 40 for each theory subject. Unsuccessful trainees who fail to secure minimum required marks in both practical as well as any of the theoretical subject, will as a rule not be a allowed to continue their training unless they pass the subjects in the supplementary examination.

The trainees will be issued certificates (marks sheets) at the end of each semester. On completion of the three years course and after having successfully passed the final examination, they are awarded Diploma of Associate Engineer in Precision Mechanical & Instrument Technology by the Balochistan Board of Intermediate & Secondary Education, Quetta.

SCOPE OF EMPLOYMENT:

The trainees of this centre are employed by the industries immediately after they are appeared in their final examination. Salaries of the engineers passed out from PSTC reaches into five figures within three years of their service.

FUTURE PLANS:

  1. To start short courses in the following fields of control technology
    1. Pneumatics
    2. Electro-pneumatics
    3. P.L.C.
  2. To conduct short courses of CAD/CAM
  3. to introduce training of D.A.E. level in Mining and Computer Technologies
  4. to up-grade the Institute to degree awarding status.

The main purpose served by the Project is to introduce an important and a new training programme din Precision Mechanical and Instruments Technology in the provincial metropolis of Balochistan. The centre has two main divisions.
